The 1920s was an era of profound social and cultural change. The wealth of the United States doubled during this decade, making it an unprecedented era of prosperity. However, underneath the surface, there were problems. Not only was income and wealth inequality rising again, but the Ku Klux Klan and anti-immigration sentiment and a new push-back against women’s equality (fear of the “New Woman”) were emerging. Were these fears based in people’s to the profound social change they were experiencing? How can we explain the rise and popularity of the Klan in the 1920s? Of anti-immigration sentiment? Of the “New Woman” and what she represented? Why did so many conservative movements arise in this period?
