The Basics
Using resources (books, book chapters, articles, etc.) relevant to your topic, produce an
annotated bibliography and a narrative literature review that
• Presents the primary ideas of each source, especially those most relevant to
your research topic/focus
• Summarizes each source’s main points, especially those most relevant to your
topic/focus, briefly referencing important examples used to support those points
• Evaluates the contribution of the source to understanding of the topic,
commenting on the strengths and weaknesses (if any) of the ideas, particularly in
terms of your topic/focus
Literature Review (RHETORICAL ANALYSES)
A literature review gives a narrative-based overview of the existing research. Your job
here is to take the research you’ve found and write rhetorically how the information will
be apart of your argument. The biggest difference between this form and the annotated
bibliography is that the literature reviewed synthesizes the information drawn from the
“conversation,” producing an essay, using citations (sometimes these are called “review
essays” or an “essay review”; and in some cases scholars produce “meta-analyses” of
existing literature).
Organization here is extremely important—it must be meaningful. A typical arrangement
of literature reviews is thematic or topical. Chronological organization can also be useful
if you wish to reflect on the history of the conversation.
Basic requirements:
• 5 pages (5 full pages to earn a passing grade)
• Correct formatting (12pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced, one-inch
margins, MLA heading, Works Cited page, etc.)
• Clear, focused review of your sources
• Effective, accurate organization
• Cohesive, developed paragraphs (topic sentence, sufficient evidence,
explanation)
• Formal, academic tone (avoid first and second person points of view – “I”
and “you”)
