Basics: Five paragraphs, each summarizing three newspaper articles on a topic related to course material.
Each of the five paragraphs should be structured as follows (example on following page):
An informative, clear main argument in your first sentence. Think of this as a lesson that the paragraph will teach. Sort of like a thesis for the paragraph. Make this just one sentence, but make sure it summarizes and sets up the rest of the paragraph.
Then summaries of three different newspaper articles on the topic, each summarized in two to four sentences and in the student’s own words. Do not use quotes from the article in your paragraph, and do not plagiarize by just copy and pasting without quote marks (I will check your assignments through Turn It In). Students that get caught copying and pasting will receive in the very least a whole grade deduction on their overall course grade (no matter what your previous grade was), and bad cases of such cheating may result in an F for the whole class and notification of the University. Do the work, summarize the article in your own words. I have zero patience for this kind of lazy, disrespectful cheating. I have had a student do this each of the past two years, and they regretted it considerably.
After you have summarized the three articles, end your paragraph with a summary statement, a sentence that wraps up what you wrote and perhaps states some of the larger significance or implications of the topic.
Your chosen newspaper articles must be recent (within the last six months) and from mainstream sources like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, the Economist (you can email me if you are uncertain). Easy way to find stuff: google the topic on google news, find recent articles that report on the topic and are from good sources. Material from random sources will not get credit.
Also!!!, I want newspaper articles, NOT opinions or op-eds. So look for articles that report on or describe stuff that is happening in the world, not pieces expressing opinions or doing analysis. (If you’re uncertain, email me.) If you use op-eds and similar material, you will not get credit for the assignment.
Cite in the text which articles you are summarizing (example in sample paragraph below, using article author’s name) and provide a bibliography at the very end of the paper (just basics needed: authors name, title of article, date of publication, and source including web address).
Three articles for each paragraph, five paragraphs total, so 15 articles total for the whole Geo 367 Extra Credit Assignment Spring 2021.
The five paragraphs can each be on any topic that we have discussed in the course. They do not have to be connected to each other. You do not need an introduction or a conclusion for the whole assignment—just the five paragraphs structured as outlined above.
So a student could do one paragraph on Lyft drivers, a second on the BLM protests, and a third on housing segregation. (Again, if you are uncertain about your choices, email me.) Or they could be more cohesive, like doing five paragraphs with each one on an issue related to affordable housing
Sample paragraph (this is from another course, but is provided so students can see the structure and length I’m expecting: notice the first sentence, three articles summarized, a concluding sentence, and the in-text citation of the article summarized in that part of the paragraph):
The decision of Brexit in the UK is an extremely tense situation within both Europe and the UK itself. One example of this tension can be seen between Scotland and Britain. There is a party in Scotland that is fighting for independence from the UK and also against Brexit in general. The success of this party could not only determine whether or not Britain leaves the European Union, but also whether or not the UK will be able to survive such an action and stay intact. The people are struggling with the decision due to the fact that many of them socially desire to be separate from the UK, but desire the economic bonds that the UK provides (Castle). Another example with many similarities to Scotland is Northland Ireland. The people of England widely approved of the Brexit vote, the people of Northern Ireland in a similar way to Scotland were mostly against it. Northern Ireland has had a long and complicated history, but because of the Brexit vote, a united Ireland is being considered as a possibility once again, something most people thought they would never see. The restriction of borders is especially significant in Northern Ireland because a Hard Brexit would make a strict border between Northern Ireland and the rest of Ireland, which could potentially only worsen the situation (Yeginsu). However, not every part of the UK is against the idea of Brexit. Britain has just voted in the new Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson who guarantees that Brexit will take place by the 31st of January. This promise is important considering that decisions on Brexit have been dragged out for a long period of time. Johnson plans on getting Brexit done and expending healthcare spending as quickly as possible with his new position (“After Election”). Brexit has many sides to it depending on the area that its affecting, and there’s no easy answer on what the exactly correct course of action is in the situation, but as plans on Brexit move forward, tensions continue to rise and will soon come to a head.
