Final Historicism Project SPR2021 | CSFRST 2374 | is Due on Carmen April 11 at 11:59 pm
In class, we’ve talked many different historical styles already, and we’ll cover many more as the semester goes on. Maybe you have looked at some of the historical styles covered in class and thought that they looked similar to styles that are popular today. Or maybe you’ve looked in your closet and thought that your clothes seem to be inspired by something from the past. This is pretty common because fashion swings back and forth between extremes about every 30 years, and historic fashion is often the inspiration for current styles. History repeats itself. The point of this project is to create those connections between current and historical styles!
You will be connecting 5 current fashion items with 5 historical fashion items. For the project, you will need to create a PowerPoint presentation and upload it to Carmen. You will not be presenting this to the class.
Step 1: Find 5 images of current fashion items from this year or next (SP 21 – 22) from primary sources that you believe have been influenced by historic fashion trends.
- The fashion items may include men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, and jewelry. Please use a variety of styles, and don’t repeat styles. You may separate out elements of dress: a neckline, a sleeve, a collar, etc.
- Document a citation for the image, including the designer or retailer name if available, style, date, and source.
Ex: This is a 2021 denim corset top from IAMGIA on DollsKill
https://www.dollskill.com/i-am-gia-coco-corset-top.html
Step 2. For each of the current fashion items you have found, find an image of a historic fashion item that you think may have inspired that current fashion item.
- These historic fashion items should be clearly similar in appearance to the current fashion items you chose.
- Document a citation for the image, including the designer name if available, style, historic time period, and source.
- Historic time periods: 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 19th century, 18th century, Renaissance, Middle Ages, Ancient World, etc.
Ex: This is a 1980s Vivienne Westwood denim corset top from Victoria & Albert Museum
https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O70079/mini-crini-ensemble-westwood-vivienne/
*When you’re finding image comparisons, please do not provide evolutionary images. Ex: Don’t compare a pair of Lulu Lemon leggings from 2021 to a pair of Renaissance tights or a bikini from 2021 to a Victorian bathing suit from the 1900s.
*Do not use the same designer for the past and present images. Ex: Don’t compare a past Vivienne Westwood corset to a current Vivienne Westwood corset or a past pair of Nike shoes to a current pair of Nike shoes.
Step 3: For each of the 5 image comparisons, provide an explanation of the relationship between the two images, current and historic.
- ** This is an extremely important aspect of the project that demonstrates your understanding of the material covered. For historical information or to learn what was happening during certain time periods, refer back to lectures, your textbook, other class materials, and the internet.
- Focus primarily on what was happening during the historical time periods that specifically influenced the creation of/ popularity of the styles you chose.
Consider: What was happening during the historic time period that cause the historic style to gain popularity? What was trending or happening socially, economically, politically, with media and celebrities, etc. that impacted the style you’re analyzing? What may have influenced the past designer to create the garment? Why might the garment be popular again today?
* You can briefly discuss specific elements of dress like sleeve, collars, cuffs, color, etc., but please focus on historical detail.
*Please do not give general details about the historic time period that don’t relate specifically to the garment you’re analyzing. Ex: Don’t discuss the space race of the 60s while analyzing a piece of mod fashion that wasn’t influenced by the space race.
Step 4: Create your PowerPoint of 6 slides (5 analysis slides, 1 title)
- Include a title page with the project title and your name.
- Each analysis slide should include the image of a current fashion item and its corresponding image of a historic fashion item. The slides should be consistently organized. It’s easiest to put the historic style on the left, the analysis in the middle, and the current style on the right.
- Each comparison slide should have a title heading the top of the page, including the historic period and the name of the style you are comparing. For instance, “1950s Poodle Skirt.” The titles should be at the top of the slide in the title section, not just listed above each garment.
- Include clear and organized APA style citations for all images used. There should be 10 total – 1 for each image used. Even if you use two images from one webpage, you still need to include a citation for each. Citations should be placed under each image. Do not add the APA citations in as a bibliography at the end, but place each APA citation under its corresponding fashion image.
Primary Sources for Final Historicism Project SPR2021: Refer back to your Week 1 Module for videos on primary sources and reliable sources. Not every source is considered a primary source. DO NOT use blogs (like Vintage Dancer), Wikipedia, personal websites, costume stores (like Halloween costumes), Pinterest, or vintage resale stores (like Ebay or Etsy).
- For current fashion items, use primary sources such as these: credible fashion magazines (Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, GQ, etc.), clear photographs of clothing items you have recently purchased, images of clothing items that are currently for sale at a retailer (online or in-store), designers’ websites, online fashion news sources (Women’s Wear Daily, Business of Fashion), and more.
- For historical fashion items, use primary sources such as these: fashion2fiber, Vogue Archive, museum collections (Victoria and Albert Museum, The Museum at FIT, The Met Museum, Kent State University Museum, etc.), designers’ websites, paintings, sculptures, your textbook images, and more.
- Example: You find an item from the Victoria & Albert Museum that looks like something you remember seeing at Forever 21. The primary historical source would be the museum item, and the primary current source would be the Forever 21 piece.
- Example: You see a photograph on Vogue’s website of the latest Dior catwalk show, which looks like it’s inspired by a Jeanne Lanvin 1920s robe de style. The current primary source would be the Vogue image of the Dior piece, and the historical primary source would be fashion2fibers’ image of the Lanvin gown.
Citations: Citation style varies from field to field. Historical costume sources are often formatted in Chicago style. However, this format is not commonly used outside of historical references, so for the purpose of this project, all sources need to be properly cited in APA format.
