Final Assignment
For your final assignment, you are asked to write an essay of approximately 6 pages on one of the questions below. The topics require that you first carry out an observation in a formal classroom setting (Except Question 3). During your observation, please do not represent events as though they were obvious as there may be something unusual or surprising occurs during your data collection process. If such things happen, please discuss it (do not ignore it).
In this report, you are expected to incorporate and build upon the research literature we have studied throughout this course. For all the questions, use Cazden (chapter 3 or 5) or Cazden & Beck and cite one or two additional theorists/researchers or readings as well.
Give your paper a thematic title and may use section headings.
For the Essay About Classroom Structures and Their Impacts, Select ONE of the following:
- What are some reasons that teachers might misinterpret some of behaviors of students as resistance to learning? Observe the verbal and non-verbal behaviors of two to three students who differ in background from one another and discuss. Suggested readings include Michaels, Schecter & Bayley, Cazden (Chapter 3).
- Analyze how turn taking gets accomplished in a particular classroom you are observing. What procedures does the teacher use to allocate turns? What strategies do students use to get the floor? How does the teacher handle breaches? See Cazdan Chapter 5.
- How do the fixed and semi-fixed features of schools structure and limit possibilities for communication within a specific school environments with which you are familiar? Hall’s work is particularly relevant here. You may also use Cazden chapter 3 and Cazden & Beck)
- What are some reasons that educators might disempower those who are outside of dominant culture? How can the class be improved? Observe a classroom and discuss based on the readings. (Suggested reading: Delprit, Cazden chapter 3, Cazden & Beck and Lipscomb etal).
- Observe a classroom and discuss how the teacher undertake students with different levels of academic achievement. How can the class be improved? (Suggested readings: Rebacca Page, Cazden, Cazden & Beck and Lipscomb etal)
Hello all,
The followings are some guidelines for your final paper.
- You may start with an introductory paragraph which includes background information, your thesis statement and how you will organize the paper. Then, the introductory paragraph can be followed by paragraphs which are called middle sections. In each paragraph, you will discuss a topic statement or theme which supports your thesis statement from the introductory paragraph. In each paragraph, your topic statement will be supported or elaborated by evidence from your observation and/or concepts from assigned readings. You do not need to discuss the readings and observation in separate paragraphs as paragraphs should be grouped by themes/points/arguments. Finally, you will end with the concluding paragraph which includes your final evaluation and personal voice.
- Or you may design the paper in any other logical ways. For example, some students may want to put classroom observation and interpretation under one sub-heading and connect the findings with relevant ideas from readings under other sub-headings. Or you may start with discussion on research literature (i.e, relevant concepts from readings), and connect them with findings from your observation. You may also include some insights from case studies discussed in the articles and chapters.
- If you select question No.1 you can incorporate findings from your observation as well as draws ideas from Michaels (narrative styles), Baley & Schecter ( home language socialization) as possible reasons and Cazden chapter 3 as the need for incorporating both traditional and non-traditional lessons.
- If you select question No.2, you can incorporate findings from your observation and draws suggestions from Cazden Chapter 5 (Variations of Discourse features). Depending on your findings, you may add any other relevant ideas from the syllabus, too.
- If you select question No. 3, you may discuss how fixed and semi-fixed features of schools structure and limit possibilities for communication within a specific school environments with which you are familiar (Hall). You may discuss different classroom activities which are usually carried out under these settings and possibilities of traditional and non-traditional lessons (see Cazden chapter 3, Cazden & Beck). You may also discuss proxemics and other possible non-verbal communication in these settings.
- If you select question No. 4, you can incorporate findings from your observation as well as draws ideas from Delprit ( how power is enacted in classroom), Cazden chapter 3 ( how to incorporate traditional and non-traditional lesson to address power imbalance), Cazden & Beck (communicative activities, support for cultural differences) , Lipscomb etal (scaffolding).
- If you select question No. 5, you can incorporate findings from your observation as well as draws ideas from Rebacca Page (motivation, participation styles, questioning), Cazden ( how to incorporate traditional and non-traditional lesson to address the problem), Cazden & Beck (communicative activities, support for cultural differences) , Lipscomb etal (scaffolding).
- For all the questions, use Cazden (chapter 3 or 5) or Cazden & Beck and cite one or two additional theorists/researchers or readings as well. For question No.2, Cazden chapter 5 is mandatory. Please use only materials from the syllabus.
- APA, MLA or Chicago citing styles. Double spaced.
