Applied Concepts Paper Guidelines
Overview: The “applied concepts” paper will deepen your understanding of the presence of social
psychology concepts in our surrounding societal systems. You will be required to select one topic or area
and discuss how the principles of social psychology are demonstrated or utilized in this area. You must
make strong connections to at least three concepts from the course material. As support, you will include
4 (four) scholarly references from academic journals, articles, or published studies.
Possible Areas: the legal system, medicine, business, politics, sports, environmental concerns, or other
(with advance instructor permission).
Research: Research and literature must be drawn from peer-reviewed journals, and be cited both in text
and on the reference page in proper APA format. Often these types of publications are available through
academic databases like PsycInfo (available at the MCPHS library and through my.mcphs.edu).
Wikipedia, WebMD, About, etc. are not legitimate peer-reviewed sources and should not be used in an
academic paper.
Format: The paper will be approximately 5-7 pages in length, excluding APA cover page and reference
page. Your work must be double-spaced and with proper APA citations. It is not necessary to write an
abstract, methods, discussion, etc. but you must include a cover page and a reference page, with
corresponding in-text citations. If you are unfamiliar with APA format, you should visit the APA
Formatting section of our Blackboard course site.
Tone: The academic tone of your writing will receive considerable attention. To that end, you should
avoid: clichés, use of the first person narrative or “I” statements, vernacular phrasing, or subjective
language.
Plagiarism: In accordance with the MCPHS University student handbook, all students are expected to
abide by a strict policy of academic honesty. Any student who violates will receive a zero and be subject
to the most severe consequences available to the instructor.
Grading: Papers will be graded on the following criteria:
1. A well-laid introductory section laying the foundation for the paper, giving the reader context for what
they are about to read; and a conclusion portion with additional thoughts that nicely wrap up the paper
2. Three strong and distinct connections to the concepts covered in class, describing and applying the
concepts accurately in the context of the chosen area
3. Four academic sources relevant to the concept or chosen area, each broken down in a way that a reader
who is not in our course could understand
4. Adequate APA format (cover page, references, headers, and in-text citations only, no sections), tone,
technical style, grammar, spelling, and clarity
Submission: The paper must be submitted on Blackboard, attached as a Word (doc or docx or pdf)
document no later than the indicated due date and time. Papers are worth 20% of your course grade. No
makeups are available at this time, so students should plan their writing time accordingly.
